Instructional Objectives

Students will be able to do the following upon the completion of each of the units.

Unit 6

Relate the life story of John Merrick, the Elephant Man.
Describe the effect of one individual on another and on the greater society.
Research the disease of neurofibromatosis.
Analyze and explain society's varying attitudes toward the handicapped.
Create an imaginary dialogue between John Merrick and his mother.
Define 22 vocabulary words.

Unit 7

Create an accurate written description of the horrors of war, inclusive of dialogue.
Research one historical aspect of the Civil War.
Compare and contrast the physical and emotional trauma of the soldier and his family during four different wars. (French/English War of 1704, American Civil War, World War II, Vietnam War).
Analyze three war songs and their messages.
Define 22 vocabulary words.

Unit 8

Recognize the literary technique of surprise endings and the use of adjectives and descriptive phrases.
Create an imaginative ending to a story.
Research one aspect of the lives of bees.
Define 94 vocabulary words.

Unit 9

Recall the content of sin Greek myths.
Identify a variety of Greek heroes, monsters, gods, and goddesses.
Explore his/her beliefs about fate.
Research the additional adventures of a Greek hero in another myth.
Explore Greek names and their connection to the English language.
Summarize important facts about three gods or goddesses.
Create his/her own myth

Unit 10

Identify the characteristics of a fable and a tall tale.
Recall sixteen of Aesop's fables and their specific morals.
Summarize the legendary feats of four American heroes.
Research two related aspects of specific tall tales and report their findings in written form.
