Instructional Objectives

Students will be able to do the following upon the completion of each of the units.

Unit 1

Define a noun, pronoun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb, a preposition, a conjunction, and an interjection.
Recognize and identify nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections and their functions in various sentences.
Apply nouns, pronouns, verbs (including tenses) adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions in a variety of sentence patterns.

Unit 2

Define an adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, or interjection.
Recognize and identify adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections and their functions in various sentences.
Use adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections in a variety of sentence patterns.

Unit 3

Define the terms of subjects and predicates, phrases and clauses, kinds of sentences and classifications.
Recognize and identify the function of the various parts of a sentence.
Apply all parts of a sentence in a variety of patterns.
Define the terms of punctuation, capitalization, and letter writing.
Recognize and identify the function of all parts of punctuation skills.
Apply all parts of punctuation skills in a variety of writing assignments, including letter writing.
Identify and write topic sentences.
Expand a topic sentence into a unified and coherent paragraph.
Use linking words and phrases correctly in paragraph construction.
Put ideas in sequential order.
List the five stages of the writing process.

Unit 4


Read for meaning and understanding.
Analyze what the author is saying.
Apply the correct meaning of vocabulary words.
Write your ideas in a chronological order.
Express your beliefs through writing in a clear, concise manner.
Distinguish between essays and short stories.
Distinguish between the different types of speeches.
Know the composition of a speech.
Learn to analyze the meaning of a speech.
Apply the correct meaning of vocabulary words.
Express your beliefs through the art of speaking in a clear, concise manner.

Unit 5

Explain the term "short stories", its history and its types.
Identify the author's message.
Specify the purpose in a short story and evaluate the author's characterization and techniques.
Discuss some structural aspects of the author's writing.
Evaluate short stories by being aware of the author's purpose and of the interrelationships among all aspects of the story.
Identify and relate the plot of the novel.
Describe the characters in the novel.

Identify and relate major and minor characters in the novel.
Identify and relate in descriptive terms the setting of the novel.
Identify point of view and relate the narrator of the novel.
Recognize and relate to the terms of the novel.
List the five stages of the writing process.
