Instructional Objectives

Students will be able to do the following upon the completion of each of the units.

Unit 6

Learn and appreciate the historical background of the English language.
Understand and know how to use prefixes, roots, and suffixes as clues to word definitions.
Understand the meanings of the most commonly used prefixes, roots, and suffixes.
Increase your vocabulary through learning the definition of prefixes, suffixes, and roots that come from Latin and Greek.
Recognize and identify synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms.
Use synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms correctly.
Use a thesaurus.

Unit 7

Understand and utilize the Dewey Decimal System to locate in the library, books on fiction, nonfiction, and reference.
Understand and utilize the card catalog, including knowledge of the author, title, and subject cards.
Recognize, identify, and use the various parts of a book.
Recognize and identify reference books and their uses, including dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, almanacs, indexes, graphs, tables, and maps.

Unit 8

Learn to read for meaning.
Analyze what the author is saying
Apply the correct meaning of vocabulary words.
Write your ideas in a chronological order.
Learn the characteristics of an essay.
Distinguish between facts and explanations, interpretation and evaluation, and literary art and the creative imagination in essays.
Study a semitechnical, persuasive/argumentative and descriptive essay.
Compare different political speeches.
Learn to analyze the meaning of a speech.
Apply the correct meaning of vocabulary words.
Express your beliefs through the art of speaking in a clear, concise manner.

Unit 9


Identify the author's message.
Identify character's motivation.
Discuss some structural aspects of the author's writing.
Recount your impressions of a given work.
Recognize and identify the use of rhyme in some poetry.
Recognize and identify the use of rhyme in poetry.
Recognize and identify the use of vivid words in poetry.
Recognize and identify the use of imaginative comparisons in poetry.
Recognize and identify the poet.

Unit 10


Understand how to choose a subject to write about.
Identify the skills involved in skimming and summarizing.
Develop a preliminary and final outline.
Properly develop, write, and proofread a report, by using card catalogs and taking notes.
List the five stages of the writing process.
