Instructional Objectives

Students will be able to do the following upon the completion of each of the units.

Unit 1

Examine the similarities and differences among the various English colonies.
Describe the role of women and Blacks in the colonies.
Determine the events that led to the growth and development of the United States.
Discuss and apply the freedoms expressed in the First Amendment as they relate to the past and to life today.
Analyze the contributions and influences made by the Spanish in the American Revolutionary War.
Evaluate the significance of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.
Compare and contrast the American Revolution and the War of 1812.
Develop an understanding of the effects of the Mexican War.
Evaluate the conditions that led to the Civil War.

Unit 2

Compare and contrast the experience of the Native Americans with that of the United States settlers
Analyze the effects the transcontinental railroads had on the economic, political and social lifestyles of the American people.
Describe the culture of the Plains Indians.
Understand ecology and determine the factors that contribute to ecological balances in our environment.
Analyze William Jennings Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech.
Discuss how the inventions of such people as Edison, Bell and Singer led to the belief of "The American Dream".
Determine the events that led America into an industrialized nation.
Relate the experiences of the immigrants who came to America.
Compare and contrast the experiences of the Spanish immigrants with other European immigrants.
Evaluate the effect that labor unions had in the work force and on all Americans.
Evaluate the "separate but equal" laws and discuss how they affected the Blacks in America.

Unit 3


Develop an understanding of the scientific advanacements at the turn of the century
Describe the parts of an atom.
Determine the factors that led to international expansion.
Analyze the characteristics of Social Darwinism.
Interpret the significance of the purchase of Alaska.
Evaluate the outcome of the Spanish-American war.
Compare and contrast Yellow Journalism with the journalism of today.
Evaluate the contributions of the Cuban leader, Jose Marti.
Describe the importance of the Panama Canal.
Apply the work of Jane Adams and other reformers of the time to reform movements of today.
Evaluate the importance of Teddy Roosevelt's Presidency.
Discuss in detail the changes that took place during the opening of the 20th century that affected the lifestyles of Americans.

Unit 4

Evaluate the causes and effects of World War I in the United States.
Analyze the Lyrics of American War Songs.
Discuss the importance of the sinking of the Lusitania.
Compare and contrast war stories on the Western and Eastern Fronts.
Evaluate the effect the war had on Americans in the war as well as those Americans who stayed at home.
Determine the characteristics of propaganda as related to selected pieces of literature.
Analyze the contributions of the Latinos in World War I.

Discuss the culture of the Latinos that lived in the U.S. during the time of World War I.
Realize the significance of Wilson's Fourteen Points and develop a peace plan for the world today.

Unit 5

Compare and contrast facts from opinions regarding the case of Sacco and Vanzetti.
Discuss the statistics involving teens, alcohol and driving.
Explain the path alcohol takes in the body.
Evaluate the effects of alcohol.
Debate the issue of women's suffrage during the 1920's.
Evaluate the contributions of such artists as Ernest Hemingway and Greta Garbo.
Determine the significance of the advances made in transportation vehicles.
Analyze the cause and effects of the Great Depression.
Describe the importance of the drug penicillin.
Relate the experience of the migrant workers.
Describe how the reforms in the work place changes the lives of many Americans.
Evaluate the role of unions.
Analyze the social, economical and political situation for Latinos in the U.S. during the Great Depression.
Discuss Diego Rivera and his artistic contributions.
Explain how television began and describe how it changes communication.
